Once upon a time, sat a committee of people who decided what words were considered “good,” and what words were considered “bad,” to use in daily writing. Everything changed when the idea of cultural slang came into the discussion. Some of the greatest news articles are conversational, like you are hearing it from your friend instead of some research paper. How can you talk without using the slang of the times?

In this post, I have written a short paragraph and translated it into each decade’s slang since the 1960’s. By the time you reach the 2020’s you might be surprised at how much things have changed.

1960s

In this zany, fast-paced world, we gotta stay on the ball! The way we jabber and scrawl counts, ya dig? Slang is the bee’s knees for latching onto readers’ peepers and linking ‘em to the info at hand. Just think how thrilling it’ll be to watch our world blossom and jam as we keep racking up the years!

1970s

In a scene that’s always groovin’, we gotta stay hip to the vibe. The way we jam and communicate is totally vital, man. Slang is the key to snagging the audience’s focus ’cause it vibes with the info right on their radar. It’s gonna be a blast watching our world blossom and jam even more as we age, baby!

1980s

In a rad world that’s totally shifting, we gotta stay in the groove. The way we jam and chat is mega crucial. Slang is a gnarly way to snag readers’ attention ’cause it totally bridges the gap with the info at hand. How tubular it’ll be to see the world expand and level up even more as we rack up the years.

1990s

In a world that’s totally rad and always switching it up, we gotta roll with the punches. The way we jot down our thoughts and vibe with each other is mega crucial. Slang is a bomb way to snag readers ’cause it helps link them to the info right in their face. How awesome it’ll be to peep the world and see it blossom even more as we get older, for sure!

2000s

Yo, in this world that’s always switching it up, we gotta roll with the times, fam. The way we write and chat? Super key. Slang is like, mega crucial for catching peeps’ eyes and vibing with the info, ya know? Can’t wait to watch the world level up and evolve as we get older, it’s gonna be lit!

2020s

In this wild, wacky world where everything’s a vibe, we gotta keep it 100! How we spit words and chat is lit, fam. Slang is basically the secret sauce to snagging those eyeballs ’cause it vibes with the info, ya feel me? Can’t wait to flex on everyone as we see our world gets bigger and better with age. Let’s get it!

Knowing and seeing all of this, it can be crazy to think about what and how we should be using it in our writing to really grab the attention of readers today. I hope you read all the way to the 2020s. I am even shocked at how we talk. But I do see daily some of these words come into play in social media captions and ad campaigns. It’s targeting an audience. Clearly, not everything should be slang all the time, but it’s not bad to add to your writing to really relate and connect with the audience.

In a world ever changing, we must keep up with the times. The way we write and communicate is so important. Slang is a huge part of grabbing readers attention because it helps connect the reader with the information in front of them. How exciting it will be to see the world grow and progress, even more, the older we get.
